Hydration is vital to your health and the way you feel and function every day. Water makes up more than half of your body weight, so it’s important to drink enough of it to keep your muscles and organs functioning properly (and to keep you from getting dehydrated!). Here are five important reasons why it’s so important to get enough water in your diet on a daily basis.


What your body needs

Your body needs water to regulate its temperature and to digest food. It also plays a key role in the release of certain hormones, including those that control thirst. Additionally, your body uses the water you drink as a solvent to help remove toxins from your blood stream.


What happens when you don't drink enough

When you don't drink enough water, your body doesn't get the water it needs to function properly. And because the body is made mostly of water, not drinking enough can lead to dehydration and other health problems. When you're dehydrated, your brain isn't working as well and it can be difficult to concentrate or focus on anything. You might also feel lightheaded or have a headache.


How much water should you drink?

Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. If you are physically active or live in a hot climate, you may need more. 

Drink before, during, and after physical activity. Drink more if you live in a hot climate or find yourself very thirsty. Drink extra water when you eat salty foods or drink alcohol.

Drinking water can help regulate your body temperature, make your skin glow, flush out toxins and help you feel full. Studies show that people who drink water before a meal consume less food than those who don’t. When you increase your water intake, it can also lead to increased energy levels and better sleep quality. It also helps reduce the risk for serious health issues like heart disease and kidney stones.
